SIXTEEN

Violet

The sound of the ocean pounded the air from afar, audible from the hill on which I stood, looking down into The Bellows from above.

I used to think the worst thing in life was not having a place where I belonged. It wasn’t. The worst thing in life would be ending up in a place without him.

I still buzzed like a honeybee with the memory of Zerion telling me to come back every day.

He didn’t need my care as often as that.

I let him know I’d return to change the dressing and to make sure it was healing properly, even though he was out of the woods by now. Truth be told, I wanted to see him as much as I could.

The chilled air cooled my heated cheeks as I remembered our naked adventures earlier in the day. The ocean breathed, her surface rising and falling in a rhythmic song, the waves beating her steady pulse, which gave me a feeling of comfort.

A feeling of home.

I started to head back to my workshop when I saw a small pack of ruffians waiting beneath the shadows of a tall fir tree, their watchful eyes were on me as I passed, and my breath cut off. I picked up my pace and kept my head down, making a break for it.

Suddenly, the largest of the bunch gave chase, yelling to his companions, "Get her!"

I glanced behind to the leader of the youthful marauders. He took a step forward, his hood falling from his head, revealing a single, blood-red eye and smiled, showing his many teeth. He waved his hand, and the group of boys darted faster toward me, their arms outstretched towards me. They growled and snarled, canine teeth gleaming in the fading light of dusk.

My feet flew across the uneven ground. I was within a stone's throw of The Bellows when I heard the sound of my necklace thumping against my chest, having freed itself from beneath my shift.

Without a second thought, I clutched it tightly in my hand to prevent its falling to the ground, and something inside me stirred—a surge of power.

I came to a sudden stop and summoned a hidden reserve of strength that propelled me towards the ruffians instead of away like a person with an ounce of sanity. I charged at them, right arm held up like a spear, giving a fierce battle cry, which was answered immediately by Colm’s voice from behind.

"Eulaliaaaa!!"

At the appearance of my gigantic friend, the gang of thugs fled, their feet pounding the dirt as they ran from us.

I breathed a sigh of relief, my heart pounding.

Colm rushed to my side, his large hands on my shoulders, and smiled down at me. "You're a brave one, Violet! That was some courage you showed there! Come, let's go back to your workshop and get you a warm cup of tea."

I nodded, feeling a new sense of fearlessness settle into my spine. I’d faced potential attackers who outweighed me by plenty and emerged victorious.
